Biodome

NEWS: Saturday, January 31st meeting in Evanston @ 9:30am

subheading: The Mind's Eye of the Inventor with picture of home inside dome
I Duane Erickson, the inventor of the Dome Home concept, offer the following information.

Feelings of the necessity of becoming self-sustaining have been on my mind since my youth. In a large part, these feelings came about as the result of my religious upbringing.
At one point in my youth, a book was given to me by my mother in which prophecies were written of things which were to happen in the future. Among these prophecies, an indication was made that during the millenium, homes would be self-sustaining and would have their own source of energy.
At that time, being in my teens the very thought of this concept was mind-boggling. As time has gone on, with new inventions and technology surfacmg, the concept has now materialized in my mind as to how this living center, seen by the prophets, can now come to fruition.
The new inventions that have came on the scene pertaining to a self-sufficient life-styles, have been incorporated in my concept.
One of the items which set my mind going was a terrarium, a glass or plastic container which housed plants and allowed the sun or light to go through to the plants inside. Inside moisture would condense on the interior of the container. What was actually being created was a small world within the world and it all happened with the use of the light.
Inside was a total living environment, a place where even pure oxygen was being produced and expelled.
This concept remained in my head. Periodically, this concept, along with others, began to form into some sort of terrarium for humans.
After more drawings and thought, the concept or invention came more clearly into view nearing something which was almost ready to be put to the test. One problem still existed: it was a very expensive home.
One day, I discovered a new plastic material which had just come on the market. This material was almost indestructible, a real problem for the landfill operations. It was clear so you could see through it, and the manufacturing process was familiar to me because I had produced products using similar production methods in producing some of my other inventions along the way.
It was sometime later that it came to me... here is a light- weight inexpensive material and product that can be molded into the design of interlocking blocks to become self-supporting structures. It could possibly be the item needed to enable the construction of the dome living centers at a reasonable price that most everyone could afford.

  1. First, it was inexpensive to produce, possibly the lowest cost building material per square foot in the world.
  2. Second, the method of production was expanding all over the world and high volume production would be available worldwide, soon if not now.
  3. When produced, it would have an air void or chamber to provide an insulaion effect.
  4. By developing the right design, it would be strong enough to support itself over a large area, possibly to encompass over an acre of ground, without the need of interior supports.

There were many other unique benefits with this material and manufacturing process which we need not elaborate on at this time.
